The future of Civic Involvement in the Euregio Meuse-Rhine
The Forum for Euregional Civic Involvement 2009 took place in Herzogenrath on May 15. During the conference, the new director of the Euregio Meuse-Rhine, Hans Niessen, held a speech on the importance of Civic Involvement in the Euregio. The event was part of the supporting programme of the Karlspreis 2009 and was organised by KreaScientia in cooperation with Gabriele Tetzner.

The Stichting Euregio Meuse-Rhine has set itself the goal of accelerating and deepening cooperation in order to increase the quality of life of its citizens of the Euregio Meuse-Rhine. It is for this reason that a structural reform to which is supposed to enable new ways of cooperating has been initiated. The seven main topics named in the Vision Document are: Economic development (sustainable growth and full employment), knowledge institutions, the labour market and education, health care, mobility and infrastructure, culture and tourism and security. As last year's "Bunt, Bonter, Variété" action week has shown, a multitude of Euregio-orientied associations, organisations are engaged in these fields zeal and professionalism.

As part of the reform process, popular support for the new initiatives is expressly desired and Euregional civic involvement can play an important role in this respect. Regarding this point, the Vision document reads that in addition to consultations in official EMR forums, this aim should be embodied by regular informal consultations. Mutual visits of the partner regions linked together by the EMR and visits to events related to the history, culture, and life in the partner regions are generously supported.

The above-mentioned aims give rise to a number of interesting questions for discussion:

1) How is the structural reform conceived and what is its relationto civic involvement?

2) How can the cooperation between initiatives, organisations and associations be be strengthened and in what way does support on the side of the Stichting Euregio Maas-Rhein make sense?

Following the "Bunt, Bonter, Variété" action week and the Forum Rolduc similar questions were already raised by some. In the light of the restructuring of the EMR, these questions have gained in importance.
